These fascinating diaries, first published in English in 1945, provided an intimate portrait of the inner workings of the Italian fascist state before and during WWII. Count Ciano was a diplomat who worked closely with Mussolini in the inner circle of Italian policymakers, handling sensitive negotiations with the Germans, Russians, and Allied powers. He paints a vivid picture of behind-the-scenes decision-making, as well as the life of Italians during the dark years of the war. Ciano eventually broke with Mussolini and was executed for treason. His diaries, however, were preserved and smuggled out of Italy, to give the world an insider's perspective on Fascist state craft. This 1946 hardback copy is in Fair Condition. The binding is tight and pages clean and unmarked. The cloth covers are clean. There is some bumping on the boards and rubbing on the edges, and the dust jacket has considerable wear, including numerous tears. Smoke-free home. See all photos carefully. RARE!
